A minimum of thirteen people lose their lives and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
