RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our safety, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
