The United Kingdom and the United States have established a significant trade agreement that will preserve no tariffs on UK pharmaceutical shipments entering the US market.
In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has committed to raise funding on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This commitment ensures that tariffs on these key goods will stay at zero for a period of the next three years.
This agreement comes after previous threats to hike import taxes on patented pharmaceutical imports, with increases discussed as high as 100%.
"This deal with the UK reinforces the worldwide climate for new treatments and brings much-needed fairness to American-British drug exports," a statement declared.
Drugs constitute one of the Britain's biggest export categories to the US, which is clearly the largest buyer for leading UK drugmakers.
Trade data reveal that in the year prior to September, the UK sold pharmaceutical products valued at £11.1bn to the US. This figure represented 17.4% of British export trade in that period.
"This deal protects jobs, boosts capital expenditure and sets the stage for the UK to emerge as a global hub for medical research," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.
The pact involves several notable changes from the United Kingdom:
The pact comes amid a long-running tension between the pharmaceutical industry and the British authorities over medicine costs and regulatory access.
The disagreement were intensified by assertions that American patients were charged significantly more for the equivalent treatments than patients in the other developed nations.
Over the last 18 months, several large manufacturing plans in the UK have been halted or cancelled, while multi-billion-dollar funding commitments have been pledged toward projects in the United States.
One official acknowledged that the NHS must spend more on medicines, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had shrunk as a share of its total funding over the previous ten-year period.
